How Much Stuff Do You Actually Have?

One of the best ways to help alleviate stress from your move is to declutter your home before hand. Most of the time, you don’t even realise how many unnecessary items you have until you really focus in on your belongings.

You’ll be surprised that the closer you look, the more you find!

Getting rid of items you don’t need, before you start to pack, will save you tons of time, money and effort. You won’t spend time packing items you no longer need and you will use fewer boxes. You could also profit by setting up a garage sale or selling online, well in advance of your move.

You can follow the rule – if you haven’t used an item for a year, you can let it go.

This rule can prevent living in excess, while having the freedom to actually own only what you want and need.

You can get rid of anything that is broken, mismatched, surplus or simply never used. This includes kitchen utensils, appliances, toys, books, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, cassettes, sauce packets, plastic containers, lids, old cookbooks, expired food and more! The list goes on.

Look into your closet and sort out clothes, shoes and jewellery you haven’t worn in a long time – if they are still in good condition, you can either donate or sell them.

You can de-clutter your linen closet as well. Leaving at least two towels, blankets, set of sheets, quilts, and bedspread for each family member is enough.

You can also check your garage to look for broken tools, hardware, construction materials, gardening supplies, camping gear, party supplies, extra car parts, as well as craft and sewing supplies you think you no longer need.

We know that keeping everything can be very tempting, as some do have sentimental value to you, but remember that moving to a new home is a fresh start.

If you take everything with you, then you may not have room for new items you might want to add to your home in the future.
